Air pollution can lead to respiratory problems in pets, causing coughing, wheezing, and difficulty breathing.

As air quality continues to deteriorate in various parts of the country, especially in Delhi and the National Capital Region, it’s crucial to protect not just our own health, but also the well-being of our pets. Experts have highlighted the significant impact of pollution on animals and provided advice on how to safeguard them.
Dr. Gautam Anand, Senior Veterinary Consultant at Dr. Anand’s Pet Clinic in Delhi, explained that air pollution can lead to respiratory issues, allergies, and even lung cancer in pets. Dogs, in particular, are highly susceptible to the harmful effects of poor air quality. They can develop temporary respiratory problems that may eventually lead to chronic conditions such as asthma. Dr. Anand advises pet owners to monitor the Air Quality Index (AQI) before taking their dogs outdoors, keep windows and doors closed at home, vacuum frequently, and replace HVAC filters regularly to maintain better indoor air quality.
Karthik Rajan, Chief Operating Officer of SAVAVET, a leading pharmaceutical company specializing in animal health, emphasized that air pollution can cause respiratory issues and eye irritation in pets. He suggests that pet owners schedule walks for their dogs during times when air quality improves, such as after peak traffic hours. Rajan also recommends consulting a veterinarian if any respiratory concerns arise in pets, ensuring timely treatment and care.
By taking these preventive steps, pet owners can help shield their furry companions from the detrimental effects of air pollution and promote their overall health and comfort.
Here are some practical tips to keep pets safe from pollution, recommended by Rashi Narang, founder and creative director at Heads Up For Tails:
- Monitor Air Quality Levels: Use apps and websites to track real-time AQI (Air Quality Index). Avoid outdoor walks on days with poor air quality and plan indoor activities to keep your pet safe.
- Seal Windows for Cleaner Indoor Air: Keep windows closed during high pollution days and use heavy curtains to block out pollutants. An air purifier can further help improve indoor air quality, especially in areas where your pet spends the most time.
- Monitor Health Symptoms: Watch for signs like coughing, sneezing, red eyes, lethargy, or loss of appetite. These could indicate that your pet is suffering from pollution-related health issues.
- Hypoallergenic Baths to Help Pets Relax: Pollution particles can irritate pets’ skin. Use pet-safe hypoallergenic shampoos to soothe their skin and ensure your pet is thoroughly dried after a bath to avoid chills in cooler weather.
These steps can help mitigate the effects of pollution and improve your pet’s comfort and health.
