Lee Se Young recently shared her thoughts on her upcoming project What Comes After Love, discussing her belief in eternal love and how it influences her approach to her roles. She also expressed a deep desire to visit the Taj Mahal, captivated by its symbolism of lasting love. Additionally, Lee Se Young revealed her attraction to portraying complex and intriguing characters, emphasizing her passion for roles that challenge and inspire her.

South Korean actor Lee Se Young, known for her diehard romantic nature and belief in eternal love, takes on a challenging role in her latest project, What Comes After Love. In this cross-cultural romantic bilingual drama, Lee Se Young portrays Choi Hong, a character whose idealistic view of love is shattered when she begins to question whether the intense relationship she thought was her “big love” was merely an illusion.
The series, which recently concluded, is an adaptation of the novel Things That Come After Love, co-written by South Korean author Gong Ji Yeong and Japanese writer Hitonari Tsuji. Through her portrayal of Choi Hong, Lee Se Young explores themes of love, disillusionment, and self-discovery as the character grapples with the complexities of relationships and personal growth.
Despite her belief in eternal love, Lee Se Young’s performance showcases the emotional depth and vulnerability of a woman who must come to terms with the idea that love may not always meet the idealized expectations we have of it. This role marks a significant departure from her usual romantic characters, offering a more nuanced exploration of love and its aftermath.
In addition to her portrayal of Choi Hong, Lee Se Young also shared her personal fascination with the Taj Mahal, calling it the ultimate symbol of eternal love and expressing her wish to visit the iconic monument one day. Her belief in love’s timeless nature continues to inspire her approach to acting, especially when it comes to taking on complex, multi-layered roles that challenge her emotionally and artistically.
The 31-year-old South Korean actor Lee Se Young began her acting career as a child artist in 1997, steadily building a remarkable career with standout performances in hits like The Crowned Clown (2019), The Red Sleeve (2021), The Law Cafe (2022), and The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract (2023). In an exclusive interview with HT City, Lee Se Young opens up about her latest role in What Comes After Love, a cross-cultural romantic drama where she plays Choi Hong, a woman who experiences the disillusionment of love.
Sharing the screen with Japanese heartthrob Kentaro Sakaguchi, Lee Se Young talks about the unique experience of working in a bilingual drama and the emotional connection she formed with her character. She also reveals how the iconic Bollywood film 3 Idiots (2009) deeply moved her, inspiring her to one day be a part of a project with a similar impact.
Known for her romantic roles, Lee Se Young is drawn to complex characters that challenge her abilities as an actor, and What Comes After Love marks another step in her evolution as an artist. Despite her belief in eternal love, the series explores her character’s journey of self-discovery, breaking free from her idealistic notions of love. Lee Se Young’s dedication to her craft continues to shine as she embraces new, diverse challenges in the world of entertainment.
What were your thoughts after wrapping What Comes After Love? Also, what did you take away from your character, Choi Hong?
After watching the drama on screen, Lee Se Young shared that she found the characters’ perspectives and situations much more understandable than when she first read the script. This experience made her realize that love is not just about emotion but also about a deep understanding of the other person—almost like entering an entirely new world. Reflecting on her portrayal of Choi Hong, Lee Se Young expressed that the role helped her realize she is still at an age where she has plenty of time to pursue many things. It was a reminder of her own personal growth and the endless possibilities ahead in both her career and life.
The drama is an adaptation of the novel, Things That Come After Love. While reading the story, how did you interpret Choi Hong? What aspects of her personality were central to your performance?
Lee Se Young highlighted one of the key aspects of her character, Choi Hong, in What Comes After Love, which is the stark contrast in her personality before and after her return to Korea. She believes that the emotional journey of parting ways with Jungo (played by Kentaro Sakaguchi) and the intense events that follow had a profound impact on Choi Hong. This perspective shaped Lee Se Young’s portrayal of the character, as she focused on capturing the heavy and intense emotions that come with such a life-altering experience. It allowed her to delve deeper into Choi Hong’s emotional transformation and the complexities of love and loss.
At one point, Choi Hong says, “I’ve always had dreams but never plans,” and tends to avoid emotionally challenging situations. Could you relate to this aspect of her character? Are there any similarities/differences between you and Hong?
Lee Se Young reflects on Choi Hong’s emotional journey in What Comes After Love, noting that the human brain sometimes forgets traumatic experiences as a survival mechanism. For Choi Hong, emotionally difficult situations were likely unbearable, which led her to suppress her emotions. While Lee Se Young empathizes with her character’s struggle, she believes that, unlike Choi Hong, she herself would not hide from such situations. This distinction highlights the emotional complexity she brought to her role, showcasing both her understanding of her character’s pain and the differences in how she personally handles adversity.

You performed in fluent Japanese in the drama. How challenging was it to express emotions in a language that is not your mother tongue?
Lee Se Young shared that portraying Choi Hong in What Comes After Love was more challenging in terms of her interactions with Jungo, played by Kentaro Sakaguchi, especially when it came to the language barrier. She explained that rather than delivering her lines in Japanese, it was more difficult to react to Jungo’s Japanese lines. Hearing certain words in her own language often elicits a natural response, but in this case, she had to rely on cues, which felt more like “homework.” This added complexity to her performance, as she had to navigate both the emotional depth of the character and the nuances of the bilingual communication between her and Jungo.
What was it like working with Kentaro Sakaguchi?
Lee Se Young expressed that working with Kentaro Sakaguchi on What Comes After Love was both enjoyable and fulfilling. She praised him as a wonderful actor who displayed altruism and consideration on set, making the experience even more meaningful. Lee Se Young conveyed her gratitude for the opportunity to share the screen with such a talented and thoughtful artist, highlighting the positive and collaborative atmosphere they created together during filming.
Like Hong, would you leave your country for love? Also, do you believe in unchanging love like her?
Lee Se Young reflected on the love shared between Jungo and Hong in What Comes After Love, expressing that if it were a love like theirs, she too would believe in its enduring nature. Like her character, she believes in unchanging love and is convinced that such love exists somewhere in the world. Her perspective on love is deeply rooted in the idea of a timeless and unwavering bond, much like the one Hong experiences in the drama.
Your filmography, including The Red Sleeve, The Law Cafe, and The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract, features strong female characters with firm beliefs and self-respect. What factors guide your choice of projects or characters?
Lee Se Young shared that when choosing projects, she prioritizes the characters, followed by the quality of the story and the message it conveys. She explained that while all aspects are important, it is the characters that truly captivate her. When reading scripts, she finds herself most drawn to intriguing and unique individuals, which influences her decision to take on a role. This approach reflects her commitment to portraying complex and memorable characters that resonate with both her and the audience.
You began your career as a child actor. How has your journey changed over time, and what has been your greatest lesson as an actor?
Lee Se Young reflected on her long journey in the industry, starting as a child actor, and emphasized the importance of the people she works with. She shared that over time, she has come to realize that these collaborators are not just colleagues but individuals who will share her journey and grow old with her. Her words highlight the deep connections and relationships she values within the industry, recognizing the mutual growth and support that come from working alongside talented and trustworthy people.
Korean dramas and stories have gained global popularity. How does this influence or challenge you as an actor? Also, does it impact your decisions?
While I believe that there are many things I have yet to accomplish, I am grateful that Korean content is gaining recognition, as it provides significant opportunities for many, including myself.
What Comes After Love is a collaborative story between Korea and Japan. Would you like to work on Indian films or projects? Have you watched any Indian movies, and do you plan to visit India?
Lee Se Young shared her admiration for the film 3 Idiots, describing it as both humorous and touching. The film left a lasting impression on her and made her consider working on a similar project someday. While she doesn’t have specific plans to visit India at the moment, she expressed a strong desire to explore the country’s rich history, particularly landmarks like the Taj Mahal, if given the opportunity. This reflects her fascination with different cultures and her openness to new experiences.
You’ve already explored historical dramas and fantasy genres. Are there any specific genres or roles you want to try?
Lee Se Young expressed her admiration for the 1997 action-comedy film Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door, stating that it would be incredible to leave behind a masterpiece like that. She sees it as a benchmark for impactful cinema and an ideal to strive for in her own career. This reflects her aspiration to be part of projects that leave a lasting impression and resonate with audiences in a meaningful way.
Finally, how would you describe yourself as an actor?
Lee Se Young reflected on life’s challenges and her journey with a metaphor, comparing herself to a seed waiting underground for winter’s arrival before sprouting. She believes life is long and filled with opportunities for growth. Observing pioneers carve their paths has made her realize that limits are self-imposed. Despite the challenges, she remains determined and focused on her path, expressing gratitude for the chance to learn, grow, and experience life. Her outlook is one of perseverance, embracing life’s difficulties while appreciating the opportunities it provides for personal fulfillment.
