The right-handed batter has communicated his decision to the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee, requesting exemption from the upcoming limited-overs home series against England, scheduled to begin on January 22 in Kolkata.

The series, which consists of five T20 matches and three ODIs, is a crucial one as it serves as a precursor to the highly anticipated Champions Trophy, set to start on February 19. Initially, Rahul was slotted at No. 6 but was promoted to the top of the order after captain Rohit Sharma became unavailable due to personal reasons.

Rahul’s performance at the top of the order was commendable, particularly in the Perth Test, where he showcased discipline in both innings. His efforts were impressive enough to prompt Rohit Sharma to shift down the order for the subsequent Tests to accommodate Rahul at the opening position. Despite this strong showing, Rahul’s form began to dip as the series progressed, and his decline was mirrored by India’s overall performance, with the team losing the final two Tests and conceding the series 1-3.

Pant, Samson pushing Rahul for a spot in Champions Trophy

Though ahead in the pecking order, KL Rahul is now competing for the wicketkeeper-batter’s slot in the Champions Trophy squad alongside Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson. Pant, while not yet setting the limited-overs stage alight, was preferred over Rahul in the last ODI against Sri Lanka, showcasing the selectors’ faith in his abilities.
