Russian Losses Mount as Zelensky Reports 15,000 Dead in New Kursk Attacks

Kyiv launched a new offensive in Kursk over the weekend, with Ukraine claiming that Russia is “getting what it deserves” as heavy attacks continue.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has claimed that Russia has suffered significant losses, with nearly 15,000 Russian soldiers killed over the past five months of fighting in the Kursk region. Zelensky’s statement comes amid a continuing barrage of attacks between the two sides, with Ukraine launching a fresh offensive in the area.

The heavy casualties underscore the ongoing intensity of the conflict, particularly in strategic areas like Kursk, which is located near the Russian-Ukrainian border. Zelensky’s remarks are part of broader Ukrainian efforts to shift the momentum of the war and pressure Russian forces in multiple regions.

Ukraine’s military has remained focused on undermining Russia’s territorial claims and defending its sovereignty, while also aiming to weaken Russian resources and morale. Despite these significant losses, Russia has not yet provided an official confirmation or detailed breakdown of the casualties in the region, as tensions continue to escalate.

The latest developments highlight the high human cost of the conflict, with both sides facing immense strain in their ongoing military campaigns. The death toll among Russian forces is just one aspect of the broader humanitarian crisis, which has seen significant suffering for both Ukrainian civilians and soldiers as the war enters its second year.

In his nightly video address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Russian forces have suffered substantial losses during the ongoing operations in the Kursk region. He claimed that, “During the Kursk operation, the enemy has already lost 38,000 of their soldiers in this direction alone, with nearly 15,000 of these losses being irreversible.”

The remark comes as Ukraine continues its surprise incursion into Russia’s Kursk region, which began in August of the previous year. The intense conflict has contributed to significant casualties on both sides, with Ukraine intensifying its military push to reclaim territory and weaken Russian forces.

Zelensky’s statement underscores the severity of the conflict and highlights Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to retaliate and disrupt Russian military operations. The escalating losses of Russian soldiers further add to the mounting pressure on the Russian military as it faces a challenging and protracted campaign in Ukraine.

Over the weekend, Ukrainian forces intensified their offensive inside the Kursk region, aiming to secure as much territory as possible before the potential change in U.S. leadership with Donald Trump’s possible return to office. Although Kyiv has not officially acknowledged the operation, a senior Ukrainian official remarked that Russia was “getting what it deserves” in the region.

In retaliation, Russia launched nearly 100 attacks in the Kursk region over the last 24 hours, according to the latest report from the Ukrainian general staff. These strikes accounted for nearly half of the assaults Ukraine reported across the entire 640-mile front line, underscoring the ongoing intensity of the conflict. Moscow is seeking to reverse Ukraine’s recent territorial gains in the region, as the battle for Kursk continues to unfold with heavy casualties and strategic importance for both sides.
