the Beauty And The Beast

Beauty and the Beast is one of the most beloved fairy tales in the world, with its origins dating back centuries and being passed down through generations. The story has been retold in countless forms, but it remains a timeless narrative about love, transformation, and the power of inner beauty.

Full Story of Beauty and the Beast

The story of Beauty and the Beast takes place in a distant kingdom, where a once-handsome and proud prince is transformed into a terrifying beast as punishment for his arrogance and selfishness. The curse placed upon him is conditional: he will remain a beast until someone loves him despite his monstrous appearance, and until he learns the true meaning of love and kindness.

The Beast’s Curse:

The curse is cast by an enchantress disguised as a poor old beggar woman. She comes to the prince’s palace one winter night, seeking shelter. The prince, disgusted by her appearance, refuses her aid and dismisses her harshly. In retaliation, the beggar woman reveals her true identity as a powerful enchantress and casts a spell on the prince. The prince is transformed into a beast, and his servants and everyone in the castle are also cursed, turning into household objects. The curse can only be broken if the Beast learns to love and is loved in return before the last petal of a magical rose falls.

Beauty’s Introduction:

In a small village near the castle, there lives a beautiful, kind-hearted young woman named Belle. Her beauty is not just external; she has a quick mind, a thirst for knowledge, and a deep kindness. She lives with her father, Maurice, a humble inventor who often struggles to find success in his creations. Belle’s love for books sets her apart from the other villagers, who often view her as “different.” The local huntsman Gaston, a handsome but vain and egotistical man, admires Belle and wants to marry her, but Belle rejects him because she sees through his arrogance and shallow nature.

Maurice’s Journey:

One day, Maurice sets out on a journey to sell his latest invention. He gets lost in the forest, and after his horse runs off, he stumbles upon the enchanted castle. There, he meets the Beast, who imprisons him for trespassing. Maurice is locked away in the castle’s dungeon, and the enchanted servants (who include Lumière the candelabra, Cogsworth the clock, Mrs. Potts the teapot, and Chip the teacup) beg the Beast to show kindness and release Maurice. But the Beast, in his bitterness, refuses.

Beauty’s Sacrifice:

When Belle learns of her father’s capture, she hurries to the castle to rescue him. Upon arriving, she pleads with the Beast to release Maurice, and the Beast agrees, but only if she stays in his place. Belle, though terrified, agrees to the Beast’s terms, sacrificing her own freedom to save her father.

Over time, Belle settles into life in the castle. She begins to learn more about the Beast’s past and his curse. Though he is initially cruel and reclusive, Belle comes to realize that the Beast is not truly wicked, just deeply lonely and scarred by his curse. She befriends the enchanted objects, who are kind and patient with her, and starts to see the Beast as more than just a monster.

The Beast’s Transformation:

As Belle and the Beast spend more time together, a bond begins to form between them. The Beast shows her kindness, such as taking her on beautiful rides through the garden, and in return, Belle helps him to open up. One of the most poignant moments in the story comes when the Beast gives Belle access to the castle’s vast library, showing her that he wants to make her happy. Belle begins to understand that, while the Beast is physically monstrous, he has a good heart.

However, the Beast’s temper still surfaces at times, particularly when Belle tries to leave the castle to visit her sick father. The Beast’s jealousy and insecurity drive him to briefly banish her, but he regrets his actions almost immediately and desperately wants her to return. Meanwhile, Belle, torn between her love for her father and the growing feelings she has for the Beast, realizes that her love for him is deeper than she expected.

The Final Test:

As Belle and the Beast’s bond deepens, Gaston, angered by Belle’s rejection and her growing affection for the Beast, leads a mob to storm the castle. They are determined to kill the Beast and take Belle back to the village.

During the battle, the Beast is gravely wounded by Gaston. Belle, in a desperate moment, confesses her love for him, and her words seem to break the curse. As she does, the last petal of the magical rose falls, but rather than perishing as the curse would have required, the Beast is transformed back into a human prince. The enchanted servants also return to their original human forms, and the curse is finally broken.

The Happy Ending:

Belle and the Prince, now reunited and free from the curse, return to the village. There, they are met with surprise, and eventually, acceptance. Gaston, however, is disgraced and is not part of their happily ever after.

The story ends with Belle and the Prince living happily ever after in the transformed castle, surrounded by their loyal friends, having learned that true love is not based on outward appearance, but on kindness, patience, and understanding.

Themes and Meaning of Beauty and the Beast:

At its core, Beauty and the Beast is a tale about transformation. The Beast’s outward monstrosity mirrors his inner turmoil and inability to love. The curse he suffers is symbolic of how a lack of compassion and understanding can turn a person cold and unkind. Over time, the Beast learns to let go of his pride and fears, and in doing so, he becomes capable of love.

The story also emphasizes the value of inner beauty and kindness over superficial appearances. Belle’s ability to look beyond the Beast’s terrifying exterior and see the good in him is what ultimately breaks the curse. This reflects the idea that true beauty comes from within, and love is not a superficial attraction but a deeper connection rooted in understanding and sacrifice.

Origins of the Story:

Beauty and the Beast was first published in 1740 by French novelist Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve. Her version, which was long and complex, was later abridged and rewritten by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont in 1756, which is the version most commonly known today.

The tale’s popularity has led to numerous adaptations across various mediums, including the famous 1991 Disney animated film, which brought the story to a global audience and is one of the most well-loved versions. Other adaptations include ballets, operas, TV shows, and live-action films, each offering a unique twist on the classic story.

Cultural Impact:

The story of Beauty and the Beast has transcended its roots as a fairy tale and has become a universal symbol of love’s power to change and heal. The phrase “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” often evokes the themes of this tale, reminding us that love involves seeing beyond the surface. The tale’s enduring popularity has also made it a symbol of redemption, where even the most flawed individuals can find happiness if they are willing to open their hearts to change and love.

Casting

Emma Watson

In January 2015, it was announced that Emma Watson had been cast as Belle, the female lead. She was the first and only choice of Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan F. Horn, who had previously run Warner Bros. which released the eight Harry Potter films that starred Watson as Hermione Granger. Watson had previously been attached to star in Guillermo del Toro‘s film adaptation of the original fairy tale for Warner Bros., but the project never materialized. Susan Egan, who originated the role of Belle in the 1994 Broadway musical, commented on the casting of Watson as “perfect”, while Paige O’Hara, who voiced Belle in the original 1991 animated film, said, “I think that if I were producing that movie, Emma Watson would’ve been my first choice for Belle. I was just really happy they went with Emma. She’s got the intelligence, she’s got the humor. I think she’s going to be really, really special.” Watson was paid $3 million upfront, with an agreement that her final take-home pay could rise as high as $15 million if the film generated gross box office income similar to the $758 million worldwide gross of Maleficent.

 Luke Evans

Two months later, Luke Evans and Dan Stevens were reported to be in talks to play Gaston and the Beast respectively, and Watson confirmed their casting the next day on Twitter.Idris Elba also auditioned for the role of Gaston.[41] The rest of the principal cast, including Josh GadEmma ThompsonKevin KlineAudra McDonaldIan McKellenGugu Mbatha-RawEwan McGregor, and Stanley Tucci were announced between March and April to play LeFou, Mrs. Potts, Maurice, Madame de Garderobe, Cogsworth, Plumette, Lumière, and Cadenza, respectively.
